Help For Your Teen's Acne

By Whitney Drake, Esthetician June 13, 2019

June is Acne Awareness Month! Acne is an inherited disorder of the pores – pores that shed dead skin cells much faster than normal. In a normal scenario, pores shed about one layer of dead skin cells per day. The acne-prone pore sheds up to five layers of dead skin cells per day and the body just can’t keep up. This forms the microcomedone, the beginning of all acne. Taking up to 90 days, it turns into blackheads or congestion under the skin; or if bacteria is present (which just loves to feed on the dead skin cells and oil), it turns into inflamed pimples or pustules and maybe even cysts.

Acne not only affects us physically, but emotionally as well. It completely changes the way we feel about ourselves, steals our confidence, and thwarts our perspective on life.  It can be debilitating, causing missed opportunities and a lack of normal social engagement.  What if the solution to achieving clear skin was in your control?

We take at least five things into consideration when treating a client with acne - your type of acne, your skin type, your skin color, your skin sensitivity and your environment. Our Face Reality Acne System will have your acne under control in about three to six months (in most cases) depending on your type of acne. The biggest part of getting your skin clear is your commitment to doing a home care regimen as instructed and following our lifestyle guidelines.

“The natural healing force within each of us is the greatest force in getting well.” – Hippocrates. Our bodies are amazing. And if you’ve heard that when they are out of balance, in any way, it manifests as a condition on the skin? Well, it’s true! This includes acne. While it is still important to use the right skincare products for your skin type (because everyone is different!) healing the skin from the inside out holds a lot of weight. From stress & hormone imbalances to toxins, there are a few different factors that trigger acne. Maintaining gut health and insulin levels (wait, what?!) are probably the most important when it comes to treating the root cause of acne. It has been called ‘diabetes of the skin’ for a reason. Learning how to balance insulin levels is key, whether you are diabetic or not. Deregulation of this important hormone is what causes cravings and other hormone imbalances. Our adrenal glands (fight or flight) need to be nourished. Toxins need to be removed. Our micro biome must be replenished. Everything is linked.

Acne may be a complicated condition but it is simple to treat once there is an understanding of what the root causes are. If you truly want it to clear up and go away, for good, take a look at the foods you are eating, the products you are using, thoughts you are thinking, the stress that is affecting you on a daily basis.  This is your life, your journey. We all have one and we only get one. Take back control of your health and be empowered! So, drink a glass of water. Research some herbs. Swap out that sugary creamer and try a dairy free nut milk. Go for that walk, hit up that CrossFit class. Write down what you’re thankful for. Take a minute (or 60) to stop and do absolutely nothing. Sleep in for goodness sakes, it’s summer! All of these things, over time, will strengthen your resilience to stress and help regain your health in every aspect. And so much more than just your acne free skin will thank you for it in return!

SUPPLEMENTS TO HELP WITH ACNE

The following supplements have been found to be useful in aiding your recovery from acne. Your
esthetician may make recommendations based on the type of acne you have.

Zinc Monomethionine
This form of zinc is the most bio-available form that acts directly as an anti-inflammatory. Many people
with acne have low levels of zinc in their body. Supplementing with zinc has been shown to reduce the
severity of cysts and inflamed lesions.

Omega 3 Fish Oils
Fish oil is a great anti-inflammatory and helps to alter sebum production; HOWEVER, only if it’s
molecularly distilled or pharmaceutical grade. Unfortunately, many fish oil supplements are oxidized
which actually creates more inflammation. So, only take it if you are sure about your source.

Probiotics
These are good bacteria that colonize the digestive tract and the skin. They can help people who have
been on long-term antibiotics (both oral and topical). These good bacteria compete with the pathogenic
bacteria and can help improve the incidence of breakouts.
