My Holiday Secret

Slow down to do more

By Heather Tootle is a marketing superwoman by trade, mom to budding soccer star Zoey and has been married to Jayson, lifelong Lake County resident, for 10 years. January 8, 2019

The holidays have come and gone, my home is back to normal (kind of), kids are back in school and the New Year is leaving me with a renewed sense of promise for 2019. It’s a blur to me on how I planned, shopped, wrapped, cooked, cleaned, hosted, travelled, and partied all while maintaining my everyday mom duties. I wonder to myself how I had the capacity to get it all done.

Amongst the hectic festivities of the past few weeks, my monthly Boxy Charm was one small gift to myself that reminded me to pause and recharge with a moment to myself. I look forward to this small black box every few weeks and this month didn’t disappoint. I prefer a mix of makeup and skincare and was pleasantly surprised at the range of products that were perfect for the holiday season.

I love how the products forced me to pamper myself with the detox charcoal mask. I feel like I ate more in the past few weeks than I have all year. The range of sweet and savory treats I don’t usually eat took a toll on my skin and the charcoal mask was exactly what I needed to help keep my breakouts under control.

December’s box provided me a palette that included warm and cool toned looks. The berry colors were the perfect complement to my holiday outfits while the lip liner and glittery gloss were easy to throw in my teeny-tiny purse for quick touch ups at gatherings with friends and family.

Here’s a full list of my December items:

  • Cosmedix Detox Activated Charcoal Mask
  • Suva Beauty Protégé Palette
  • Bodyography Lip Liner
  • Tarte Glitter Paint
  • Pretty Vulgar Translucent Setting Powder

It’s hard to think about yourself when we spend the whole season thinking about others. Figuring out the best gifts to buy, which recipe will go over best at the company Christmas party, making sure out-of-town guests are comfortable, and how to get kids to get along and stay entertained through the extended vacation. But, something as small as throwing a mask on your face and having your husband and daughter laugh at how silly you look seems to slow time down for a moment. You begin to focus on being still, maybe putting your feet up and closing your eyes for 10-15 minutes. This small feat is enough to remind me that the holidays will come and go, and if you don’t stop and take a minute for yourself, you can’t give your best to the ones you love.

Good news is, we’ve made it through and it’s only 11 months until we get to do it all over again.
