Fun Thanksgiving Traditions

Helping Others

Volunteering as a family is always a great idea but can be especially impactful to young children if done during the holidays. Many local churches and charities offer opportunities to serve a Thanksgiving meal or donate food for families in need. Check out Lake Cares or  Center Street Kitchen.

Everybody Cooks

Who says Mom needs to do all the cooking? Enlist the creative help of the entire family by tasking them with finding (or creating) one recipe per person. Then have fun cooking together with maybe even some friendly competition by voting for the best dish at the table!

Thankfulness Tree or Turkey

Depending on the age of your children you can get crafty with either of these ideas. For young children, trace their hand into the shape of a turkey (the thumb is the head). Have them color the turkey after writing four things for which they are thankful on each feather (fingers). Older children enjoy writing down their thankfulness on small cards cut into the shape of leaves and hanging in a small potted plant or tree that serves as a centerpiece. If you aren’t the crafty type, just take turns going around the dinner table and have each person express their thankfulness.

After the Meal

Take a family walk after indulging in the feast! This can be a great time for bonding, enjoying the cooler weather (hopefully!) and getting in some exercise on a typically inactive day. You can walk in your neighborhood or visit a local park with trails like North Lake Community Park or Gilbert Park.
